i watched the gangnam style video again after that great discussion yesterday about the implications of the lyrics/video and i can see things that are PROBABLY SYMBOLISM but i don’t know??? i don’t know anything about gangnam (the area) or the difference between upper and lower class korean society.
i’d like to have a sitdown with psy and have him explain everything to me.
i’lll POINT OUT SOME OF THE MAIN VISUAL GAFFES as soon as i don’t have work in 30 minutes screams and runs out the door
OK MAIN VISUAL GAFFES (the ones that are beyond the language barrier)
- SATIRE OF THE UPPER CLASS: constant throughout the video! you have psy relaxing in swim trunks with a gorgeous babe fanning him in… the sand pit of a kid’s playground. he’s doing a fabulous red carpet strut in a stable fully populated by horses. there is a shot of him doing a powerful bridge of the song, he’s in shades and a suit… and the camera pulls back to see him sitting on a john. satire of the upper class is everywhere, begging the question: what actually makes their standard of life any better than the middle lower class? if the upper class eats, sleeps, and shit like we do, why do the trappings of their luxuries seem more like necessities than, well, luxuries? the over the top campiness pokes fun at this the best, i think.
- SATIRE OF SEXINESS/ROMANCE: psy is not a very attractive man, but he takes center stage with probably the most hilarious dances and probably the weirdest shots of him doing shit around the video; from the too famous horse dance to the languid shots of him getting fanned by the fan girl, he takes the glitzy, glamorous view of music, entertainment, and celebrities, and turns it on its head. sexiness is poked fun at quite a bit in the video too: when he’s strutting down the horse stable with the two babes and the wind machine turns on and the snow hits the fan, after a while the snow gets unbearable and sticky and the models are clearly uncomfortable. are they still attractive? yes. but now they’re holding their faces and covering their mouths because ew dear god is that salty? they’re sexy but they’re also humans who experience discomfort, unlike psy who has his mouth gaping wide, welcoming the weird snow stuff still blasting into his face. with the girls doing calisthenics/yoga, you think the video is going to play it straight, but no. psy cannot stay dignified around the butt. he must yell at the butt. the butt is just that damn fine. i think this is a very relatable emotion, one that taps into the innate embarrassment in thinking that you like someone because they just look that good.
- THERE HAVE TO BE MORE BUT I HAVE AN OPENING SHIFT TOMORROW AND UNFORTUNATELY I’M PROBABLY NOT GOING TO PUT MORE INTO THIS UNLESS I’M DOING THIS FOR A GRADE OK KISS I LOVE YOU ALL GOOD NIGHT

AH this is really interesting thank you for explaining this!
more good words
Notable: that’s not snow — it’s TRASH, and also one of those models covers her mouth to keep from bursting into laughter...
Oooh interesting OvO
